Water
Malawians face significant water scarcity as well as a lack of access to potable water. There is no tap water at home, and many of the nation’s existing wells have dried up. It is common for citizens to travel miles on foot or via bicycle to a village with a functional well, only to lose much of that water on their journey home.
Eleven Lights has plans to collaborate with corporate social responsibility programs in Malawi to repair depleted wells, making safe water more accessible to broader areas.
Agriculture
Though the economy is largely based on agriculture, the ability of most farmers to succeed is limited by reduced access to water and commercial markets. Many farmers rely exclusively on rain to water their crops as access to water is challenging and they lack techniques for storing runoff. This affects the chances of a successful harvest. Once crops are ready for harvest, however, the majority of farmers are only working at a subsistence basis, farming and selling just what they need for their families to survive.
Solar power is a growing source of energy in Malawi. Eleven Lights aims to connect villages via a solar irrigation system as well as provide runoff storage techniques and regenerative farming methodologies, with the inevitable goal of cooperative farming. Our organization will also help farmers find markets beyond their local communities where they can sell their excess crops.
Medical Care
The maternal mortality rate is one of the most critical indicators of health in a developing country—and Malawi has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in all of Africa. Access to medical care is limited, and the medical clinics that do exist are understaffed and lack the supplies and equipment needed to provide more advanced treatment.
Eleven Lights has already transformed a small clinic in Malawi into a medical center, providing it with X-ray technology, lab testing, and a maternity facility that can safely provide C-sections and other OB-GYN care. We are working to bring resources to more clinics throughout Malawi.
Our Goals
Our goal is to comprehensively transform disadvantaged communities around the world by empowering them to be more self reliant. Using our founder’s native Malawi as our starting point, we are concentrating our efforts on three crucial resources: water, agriculture, and medical care.
Our Ongoing Projects
We are currently working to create partnerships with corporate social responsibility programs in Malawi to repair depleted wells, making safe water more accessible to broader areas. We also aim to connect these areas with solar power, a growing source of energy in Malawi. Through providing solar irrigation as well runoff storage techniques, we will be able to help Malawians maximize their access to water. From there, our goal is to help regional farmers improve their businesses through regenerative farming methodologies and cooperative agriculture.
